Dusit Thani College (DTC), Thailand’s premier hospitality education institution, recently sent two students from its Hotel and Resort Management (with the academic certification of Ecole hôtelière de Lausanne) program to attend “The PATA Adventure Travel Conference and Mart (ATCM) 2020”. The three-day event this year was held at Sutera Harbour Resort in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah – Malaysia and comprised of one-day travel trade mart and one-day conference, along with other value-added activities that facilitate networking and relationship building which all benefit and give an invaluable experience for students and attendees. The PATA Adventure Travel Conference and Mart 2020 was Asia-Pacific’s leading travel trade event dedicated to the adventure travel and niche tourism. Niche tourism is now becoming more popular as visitors are no longer contented with sightseeing and taking pictures of the sceneries. Because of the popularity of Adventure tourism, activities such as mountaineering, skydiving, scuba diving, boating, trekking, and many others are being added to the itineraries of the visitors. So, this year’s event started with one-day travel mart and one-day conference. Dusit Thani College’s students had an opportunity to meet the experts in travel industry, the adventure product buyers and sellers from all over the world. They discussed about the trends and dynamics of adventure tourism and the challenges and opportunities that it offers to the industry.
Mr. Elliot Laoroekutai, DTC’s student shared about this event “This conference got me to immerse myself into adventure tourism. The program included several keynote presentations in relation to the main topic: a panel discussion in engaging tourists with elephants authentically; networking coffee breaks; and a workshop. I got to establish connections with a few people from the travel industry during the networking breaks as well as during the workshop. Overall, it was a very rewarding experience attending this conference. Since adventure travel has a close link with the hotel industry, it helps me to get an idea on how to design some kind of travel packages for this growing segment in a sustainable manner (as a future hotelier).”
And Mr. Thanawat Wongsrisathapong, also DTC’s student who joined this event, said “I’ve learned about the stakeholders, from tour operators to restaurateurs, in adventure tourism. Moreover, I have become more aware on how carbon footprints and pollutions are linked to sustainable tourism. It was great to hear stories and ideas from experts and professionals. It is very inspiring for me to run my business sustainably in the future. Finally, I now have insights about adventure tourism, in case I ever work in positions related to this sector.”
